Legislative Internship Program Highlight

The Legislative Internship Programs, sponsored by the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management, assists several qualified Georgia Southern University students with securing experiential learning through internships with Georgia representatives’ congressional offices in Washington, D.C. and in state legislative offices in Atlanta. This exciting and intensive program’s goal is to provide Georgia Southern University students with a well-rounded educational opportunity to complement their traditional classroom learning while also allowing them to immerse themselves into the unique political, intellectual and cultural atmosphere of our State or Nation’s capital.

Since taking responsibility of the program in 2008, 86 outstanding students have been selected to participate. Additionally, those students represented degree programs in International Studies, Communication, Public Relations, Journalism, English, Chemistry, History, Foreign and Modern Languages, Economics, Accounting, Marketing, Education, Engineering, Justice Studies, Public Health, in addition to Political Science. Recruiting multiple majors to participate matches a student’s degree program to all topics and issues facing our state and national government.

As shown in the chart below, the program has seen an increase in student participation over the past few years and more students have opted to participate in a Fall or Spring semester experience. The Fall or Spring semester internship is a full 18 week experience providing the student the opportunity to work more in depth on projects and assume additional responsibility within the legislative offices.

chartGeorgia Southern also has more than 200 alumni in the DC area many of whom got their start in the Legislative Intern program. While interning for Senator Johnny Isakson, Annalee Ashley, was offered a full-time position as Staff Assistant for the Committee on Rules and Administration at the United States Senate upon graduation. Annalee now coordinates the summer intern Lecture Series and is responsible for coordinating the logistics for hosting notable persons such as Ann Ravel, Charles Krauthammer, Elena Kagan, John Lewis, Kevin McCarthy and Krystal Ball. Annalee is an example of the great contributions our Alumni are making in our Nation’s Capital.
