Step Three: Determine Your Eligibility

If you’re a current or former member of the US military, you and your family have access to some of the best education assistance programs in the country. Explore a wide range of benefits below in our Virtual Benefits Briefing. Some of you may qualify for multiple benefits.

Chapter 33: Post 9/11 Benefits

If you’ve served on active duty after September 10, 2001, you may qualify for the Post-9/11 GI Bill. You may also qualify if you are a dependent or Spouse using benefits transferred by a Veteran or service member.

Chapter 31: Vocational Rehabilitation

The Vocational Rehab and Employment (VR&E) program provides services to eligible Service members and Veterans with service-connected disabilities to help them prepare for a new career.

Chapter 1606 & 30: Montgomery GI Bill

The Montgomery GI Bill – Selected Reserve (MGIB-SR, Chapter 1606) provides up to 36 months of education benefits to members of the Selected Reserve. This includes the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard Reserves. It also includes the Army National Guard and the Air National Guard. Payment rates are based on enrollment status and increase every October.

Chapter 35: Survivors and Dependents Educational Assistance

If you’re a dependent spouse or child—or the surviving spouse or child—of a Veteran, you may qualify for Chapter 35 (also called Chapter 35 benefits). The DEA program provides up to 45 months of education and pays the stipend directly to the student. Children who are determined eligible have until the age of 26, and spouses have up to 10 years of eligibility, at a maximum of 45 months of benefits.

Federal Tuition Assistance

If you are currently serving in the military, you may be eligible for funding through the Department of Defense Tuition Assistance program. This program provides 16 credit hours per year of covered tuition cost.
